A PICTURE OF PASSOVER U.S.A., 1944 - 2016 - APRIL 27, 2016

What has happened in the meantime to blur the memory of Jews without a country?

Published: Wednesday, April 27, 2016 10:50 AM
There is a picture that shows the family, father, mother, sister, baby brother and how it was when they arrived in America.

They arrived, by coincidence, the first night of Passover, 1944. The place was Philadelphia, U.S.A. This too was coincidence.

They came over on a ship named the Serpa Pinto. This was a ship that was blessed as an earlier ship, the St. Louis, had been cursed.

This family were not supposed to be in Philadelphia or anywhere else in America.

The Roosevelt administration did not want them or any other Jews fleeing Hitler, or perhaps FDR did not want too many. A few got in, and stayed.

So there were rules that limited access, known as a quota.

He says he loves Israel BUT. He is among the many American Jews who love Israel BUT.
The Serpa Pinto had left Portugal destined for Canada, but Canada also had a quota, and this quota was firmly enforced by the government.

Asked how many Jewish refugees Canada would accept, a spokesman for Prime Minister Mackenzie King declared, “None is too many.”

But this ship, as opposed to the St. Louis, did not turn back to deliver its passengers into the waiting arms of the Gestapo.

The Serpa Pinto had made it this far through the high seas patrolled by German U-Boats that had been firing torpedoes, but kept moving forward, until it reached Philadelphia, but only for a pause, because there was still the quota, and this quota said that if any passenger was seen planting so much as a toe on American soil, this passenger would be deported.

The mother in the picture almost tripped from a plank that almost ended it all for her and her entire family.

She would never forget this and spoke of this frequently and of other instances that could only be called miracles.

The people in this picture to this day are not sure how they got to celebrate Seder night in Philadelphia, or where. Those were confusing times. But either a bus or a train took them somewhere, and there they sat praising freedom from Hitler as their ancestors had praised freedom from Pharaoh.

But America was not yet the Promised Land, and neither was Israel, because as yet there was no Jewish Land reborn. This was still 1944.

That was the year that Hitler was murdering thousands of Jews by the hour.

The Promised Land would have to wait and since America did not want this family, they had to be taken elsewhere.

No one in the picture remembers how this happened, but somehow they got to Canada.

A wonderful country, Canada.

The father in the picture, trained as a rabbi, often joked how Moses had meant to say Canada but it came out Canaan because of his stutter.

So the family made itself at home in Montreal, a big, sprawling, brawling town, historic and modern all at once, so utterly French and British but still somehow Canadian, and there the father in the picture, Noah, found it difficult to get things started those first few years.

Later they got to the United States, which had been the original plan as mapped out with the Allies in cooperation with the Nazis.

That part remains a mystery – and another miracle.

Today, I still look at the picture, the picture of this family, my family, and I study it to imagine what they must have been thinking at the moment that snapshot was taken at a Seder in Montreal, 1944. No one is smiling. They all look exhausted and dazed. The voyage had been treacherous, they had left everything behind, and now they do not know what to expect.

They do not know what to expect because to expect the worst had become normal. That is what the picture says.

Also today, in time for Passover 2016, I received a message from Orit Arfa, a wonderful writer in Israel and a dear friend (you must read this book of hers) alerting me about Michael Chabon, a very successful author born in the U.S.A, a Jewish author who writes upon Jewish themes.

He says he loves Israel BUT. He is among the many American Jews who love Israel BUT.

Born in the U.S.A, he will never know what I know. I am the baby in that picture. I know what it is like not to be born in the U.S.A.

I know what it’s like to be without a country, when America was a distant place and Israel was a distant dream.

There can be nothing to explain to people like Michael Chabon who love Israel BUT.

DOESN'T THE ISRAELI LEFT ALSO HAVE SONS? - APRIL 21, 2016

What if the son of a leftist found himself in Elor Azariya's situation and shot?

Published: Thursday, April 21, 2016 12:30 PM

Every time I think I know something, turns out that I don’t. My lack of knowledge is vast.

For example, I thought I had it all figured out about the left, which make up, I’d say, about 10 percent of the Israeli population but runs so much of the entire show, like the high court, the news media and the arts, and even, in some cases, the top brass at the IDF.

Which brings us to the situation facing Elor Azariya, a 20-year-old sergeant from the storied Kfir Brigade who’s in trouble for finishing off a terrorist.

For doing that, he’s been charged, by a military court, of being too hasty, or to put it in official language, manslaughter and inappropriate behavior.

By the way, by use of American firepower, including drones, we kill thousands of terrorists every year in places like Somalia and Afghanistan.

Nobody talks about manslaughter or inappropriate behavior. We just do it because a terrorist is a terrorist, we’re right and they’re wrong.

What I don’t get is the malice and the ruthless attacks against this soldier, coming from people who themselves have kids in constant jeopardy.
It’s us or them, so we prefer that it be them to take the bullet.

We shut up about it and make no big deal about dead terrorists. Navy Seal Chris Kyle is credited with being the most lethal sniper in American military history. He’s been credited with 160 kills during several tours in Iraq and

it’s doubtful that he asked too many questions before taking aim. Even later nobody asked. He is considered a great warrior for our side, a hero.

Apparently it’s different in Israel, the part being run by the left, and which wants this soldier, Elor Azariya drawn and quartered, if you will forgive my exaggeration, but I don’t exaggerate too much. Instead of a medal of honor, which many of us think this Israeli hero deserves for acting so decisively, the left is onto a campaign to vilify this soldier and by insinuation his family and his unit…and the IDF…and Israel. (Our earlier coverage of this for Arutz Sheva here.)

The language being used against him is downright slanderous and we are not talking about the Arab side that a few nights ago held a victory party to celebrate a bus bombing in Jerusalem that burned and wounded more than a dozen Israeli civilians.

No, we’re talking about the Israeli left, the Haaretz types who have no patience for the facts, or for Jewish heroes, they’re so much in a hurry to pile it on this kid, and as I say, the invective has been brutal, and as I said earlier on, I remain clueless as to what motives the left.

Aren’t they also Israelis? Aren’t they also Jews, and here is the main point – don’t they also have sons and daughters in the military?

Aren’t they concerned about their own children in the same spot where Elor Azariya finds himself?

Or are there exemptions for the left? As soon as you show your Amira Hass or your Gideon Levy papers you are free to stay home.

Yes there are exemptions, but for other reasons. Most serve, and serve (along with the United States) in the most honorable military in the world.

So I get it, yes I get it about keeping it ethical, above reproach. What I don’t get is the malice and the ruthless attacks against this soldier, coming from people who themselves have kids in constant jeopardy. To what end is this spite and derision? What happened to Elor Azariya yesterday could be happening to your IDF child tomorrow.

Or is this thinking too deep for people who’ve already made up their minds, in the worst possible ways.

Maybe it’s getting lost, the fact that every single soldier protects the entire nation, and this includes protection for leftists and Arabs, the million and a half of them who seem quite happy to stay put in a land that so often takes their side of any argument.

JOHN KASICH TEACHES TORAH TO THE JEWS - APRIL 18, 2016

Kasich lectured Torah scholars in a Jewish bookstore and he was not being subtle...

Published: Monday, April 18, 2016 8:03 PM

If John Kasich is your man to come save the Republican Party in the race to the White House, you may want to think this over.

Who knew he was such an arrogant fool?

As reported here by New York Magazine, the Governor of Ohio and the number three man among the GOP candidates drifted into a New York bookstore run by Torah scholars where most people come to learn. Kasich came to teach, to teach and to ridicule.

Surely angling for Jewish votes days before the New York Primary and the arrival of Passover, he may have picked the wrong group to win hearts and minds, showing off as he did in front of men who’ve been studying Torah since the age of three and since the age of Moses…or from the day Moses brought it all down to us from Mount Sinai.

If you thought Rashi was the man who unlocked the secrets of our Scriptures, forget it, because John Kasich knows better.

In the most repellent performance of this campaign season by any candidate, Kasich swaggered among these learned men intent on straightening them out about what’s really going on in the Hebrew Bible, and he was not being subtle. Some would say he was being totally obnoxious. I would.

He walked around the shop, filled with a thousand volumes of Biblical texts, texts that many of these men knew by heart, as if he owned the place and as if he owned the Bible. If you thought Rashi was the man who unlocked the secrets of our Scriptures, forget it, because John Kasich knows better.

From what was picked up by New York Magazine, we find men of learning being elaborately polite to such an important guest, as he kept hectoring them about the heroes of the Bible, beginning, for him, with Joseph, the story Kasich particularly liked, so he explained it as if this was breaking news.

The men listened courteously as Kasich peppered his one-of-a-kind expertise with such remarks as,

“Do you guys like Joseph?”

Well of course they did.

“Do you guys know the story of Joseph?”

The men were too respectful to laugh in his face at such a question.

From Joseph, Kasich moved on to Isaac, and then to Joshua.

“Do you guys know Joshua?” asked the governor of Ohio and the man who thinks he still has a chance to become President of the United States.

Maybe so on becoming President – and maybe these men of the Hebrew Bible know Joshua. There is always that chance.

Or maybe not, because John Kasich was quick to add: “Am I going to have to teach you guys?”

After teaching about Joshua, Kasich moved ahead to Moses and Abraham. He explained the differences, as Maimonides never could.

Who needs Jewish Torah genius, which evolved over the centuries, when we’ve got John Kasich?

Good thing he came along to clear it all up, all the way from Ohio.

I spent some good years in Ohio, Cincinnati, and I do not remember people being quite that offensive, backward and simple-minded.

Maybe I stayed in the wrong parts of town and maybe in other parts there were citizens who thought Jews walked with horns and tails.

I looked him up and found that John Kasich was a newcomer. He was born and raised in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania.

That is probably a good town with fine people – but since John Kasich is their son, who knows what they’re really thinking?

DO ISRAEL A FAVOR AND BACK OFF--PLEASE - APRIL 17, 2016

Don't want your honey and don't want your sting.

Published: Sunday, April 17, 2016 10:29 AM

Something feels rotten when Democrats start talking about Israel. Even their words of support sound fishy.

Bernie says, “Yes, Israel has a right to defend itself.” Wow. How generous. Keep it going like that and better than Brando in “On the Waterfront,” you will remain a contender. You will be somebody. But then he keeps talking and ruins everything. “But I question the disproportionate response.”

That’s approximately a direct quote. I couldn’t keep up as these two kept going at it during the Thursday night main event on CNN.

Well somebody had to watch it, and I did. I did it for you, to spare you the gibberish.  Yes this was some brawl between these two Democrat lightweights. Blitzer had to keep stepping in to keep them apart and the last time I saw anything like this was when Mike Tyson bit somebody’s ear off in the ring. (Evander Holyfield.)

The two contenders left standing for the Liberal side faced off over the banks, Wall Street, the economy, race relations, the minimum wage, gun control, but I can’t recall who was in favor of this or against that, because I do not believe a word of it anyway.

They’ll say anything to get elected and do unto us what Obama has been doing over the past nearly eight years – only double.

I do know that they love abortion, adore mass legal and illegal immigration, and have no problem with terrorists.

I took notes, but not fast enough to catch anything on foreign affairs, like say Iran, Iraq, Syria, North Korea or any of the other places that pose a danger to themselves and to the United States of America…not to mention Israel. My mistake. Israel is always mentioned. Israel always comes up.

The world has become a small place for Liberals. There’s us, and there’s Israel, and seldom in a good way. But hold on.

Hillary came back to say…I’m not sure what it was, but it sounded like she was taking Israel’s side, more or less.

Hillary, who takes advice from people like Sid Blumenthal and other anti-Israel hotshots, said Israel has a right to do anything to stop the bombing.

Which Hillary would we be getting if she gets herself to the White House heaven forbid? Bernie we know. Oh Bernie we know.
Or was that Trump? Yes it was Trump speaking someplace else. Go Trump!

But Hillary was not about to let Bernie get the upper hand on who’s the bigger fake Zionist.

She said, “Hamas uses human shields because Gaza is so densely populated. They have no choice.”

No, wait. That was January two years ago when Hillary excused Arab terrorism and placed the entire blame on the Jewish State.

Fast forward to Thursday night, and NOW she says quite the opposite, that Israel is on the spot against an enemy that uses every dirty trick in the book.

Or something like that, according to my notes. But clearly she was reaching for the Herzl Prize.

Which Hillary would we be getting if she gets herself to the White House heaven forbid? Bernie we know. Oh Bernie we know.

At a time when Israel needs a true and firm friend from the United States, both of these pretenders remain lukewarm, two-faced and hypocritical. Neither of them seems capable of getting it straight when
it comes Israel, a condition that seems to afflict so many Liberals from the top all the way across.

So why not just back off?

Israel, which ranks as the world’s sixth happiest country, does not need all that attention, not your curses or even your blessings.

As Rashi has it terms of an insect for the hypocritical Balaam: “I don’t want your honey and I don’t want your sting.”

"JEWS FOR BERNIE" - REALLY? APRIL 13, 2016

It can't be serious, it's almost like "Jews for Korach."

Published: Wednesday, April 13, 2016 11:58 PM

Honest, I don’t know if it’s ever been this bad. Every day I read something that makes it seem like American Jews have lost their minds.

Listen to this: “What he stands for is what my Judaism has been about my whole life,” Jeff Marker, a Jewish Renewal rabbi from Brooklyn, said in an interview at the brunch. “Social justice, and understanding that peace and security for Israel only comes when there is peace and justice for Palestinians.”

That came from a “Jews for Bernie” brunch in Manhattan, covered by JTA, and typifies what was being said at an event that could have been named “Jews for Farrakhan.”

Consider me in the dark as to what the heck is going on with my landsmen here in America.

Obviously there is something I’m not getting when I hear “peace and justice for the Palestinians” as if it’s Israel’s fault for every Arab stabbing attack.

What is a “Jewish Renewal rabbi” anyway? What’s there to renew after 3,500 years? Is Bernie coming to renew with his new blood libel?

He told the New York Daily News that he really wasn’t sure what happened in Gaza back in 2014. "Anybody help me out here, because I don't remember the figures, but my recollection is over 10,000 innocent people were killed in Gaza. Does that sound right?"

That remark alone should have cancelled the event on the spot.

But the “Jews for Bernie” showed up and keep showing up as I insist in this thriller that’s begun selling out where it’s not boycotted for being too “anti-Hamas.”

With Jews like that, who needs BDS? In fact these so-called Jews are BDS and certainly they are cheerleaders for SJP, Students for Justice in
About 80 percent voted for Obama twice. Does this mean that 80 percent have fully converted from Judaism to Liberalism?
‘Palestine’…and never mind that it’s these thugs who are tormenting Jewish kids on Campus…obviously with a handshake from “Jews for Bernie” and a pat on the back from Bernie himself.

For my part, I choose to believe that we’re talking about a minority among my landsmen. Most American Jews are not that far gone.

We have hope. We have Zionists among us, people who understand that a strong Israel means a strong America.

Let’s recall the high number of Americans who rushed to Israel at the coming of every war. Plenty would do so again.

But so what do I do with this picture? About 80 percent voted for Obama twice. Does this mean that 80 percent have fully converted from Judaism to Liberalism?

I refuse to buy this. We, the people of the Book, the people who produce Einsteins, cannot have lost our good senses in a single generation.

Actually, this is not so new after all. Our history is full of rebellious sons. Our Book itself tells about uprisings, yes, even outside of America.

Our Book of Scriptures devotes an entire chapter to Korach and his revolt against Moses.

So we had them right from the start and the Torah does not shy from mentioning them by name.

Korach wasn’t alone. Korach was joined by other malcontents who came as “Jews for Bernie.”

Our sages of 2,000 years ago, the men who during the Age of Rome compiled our liturgies, were so threatened by turncoats that they added the following to our 18 Benedictions: “May there be no hope for informers.” King David suffered greatly from scoffers, including Torah giant Doeg, and his own father-in-law, King Saul.

So it runs in the family, I suppose. But those were exceptions.

According to the rules, the majority of us stayed true to our kinsmen, our faith, our love of Zion.

So I’ll stick to the belief that the “Jews for Bernie” are (allegorically) destined for the same pit that swallowed the “Jews for Korach

NEW YORK NOT YOUR KIND OF TOWN, BERNIE OR HILLARY - APRIL 10, 2016

New York can't be romanced with a smile and a shine.

Published: Sunday, April 10, 2016 10:17 PM

Stay off our streets. Please. We don’t tolerate fakers, pretenders and phonies who come as if they belong but never paid their dues.

Riding our subways, eating our hot dogs, mingling with the locals in Brooklyn and the Bronx – you can’t really suppose that’ll do the trick.

So forget your posters and slogans that wowed them in Bridgewater, Iowa.

We’re wise to the difference between the real deal and a yokel. We may be smart-alecky and brash, but we visit the sick and we’ll also give you the shirt off our back.

We’ll take that instead of the smooth-talk that brings blood-libelous false charges against the Jewish people, Bernie.

We have no tolerance for backstabbers.

We’ll match our rudeness against your snoozing while Benghazi burned, Hillary.

We can spot a flim flam routine a mile away.

We have enough Three Card Monte Street Hustlers. Or had them until Rudy busted them, once and for all, or so we thought, until you two came along… came along schnorring for votes and whoring for Primary delegates toward a Democratic National Convention that misses no opportunity to jeer the Jewish State whenever Israel is mentioned.

In “The Days of the Bitter End,” the best novel I ever wrote about the days of my youth in New York, I said that the same thrills can never come round again.

We don’t like sneaks, Bernie, and we don’t like cheats, Hillary.
Still true – but also true that this is still a town of big dreams. New York is always different but New York is always the same. No time for Babbitts who come with a Willy Loman pitch to sell goods that what nobody wants. New Yorkers can’t get romanced with a smile and a shine.

We invented Advertising and the Huckster trade, right there on Mad Ave., but we don’t like sneaks, Bernie, and we don’t like cheats, Hillary.

That is so backwoods, so Hicksville. Rehearsals are over. This is Broadway, remember. You can’t make it there with an act so sleazy.

Small-timers, singles hitters, don’t get cheered around here. A strike out is okay. It proves you tried. But hypocrites have no shot.

Not today and not then, back when New York was my New York and Lenny Bruce (as I wrote) was shpritzing his Seven Forbidden Words on Bleecker.

No, New York never changed. Not really. The young got older, that’s all. It can be a town without pity but mostly it’s a big-hearted town. Everybody gets a chance and it’s always worth a try. Some succeed. Many fail. That’s not New York’s fault. That’s life.

Bill de Blasio, you say? Or Mayor Pu**, as the New York Post calls him – yes, that was a mistake. Don’t expect us to do it again with more corrupt Liberals.

We’re big. It’s the Democrat Party that got small. Listen to this:

“America will pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.”

That was JFK, of course, Hillary. That was a Democrat without the Socialist/Communism, Bernie.

Please don’t bring up the joke about the out of towner on Broadway who asks: “Excuse me, Sir, can you tell me how to get to 72nd Street?”

“Or should I just go to hell and take a hike?”

Funny, maybe, but it’ll do for a hint.

TIME TO CALL BERNIE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN AMERICA - APRIL 6,2016

Bernie presents a clear and present danger.

Published: Wednesday, April 06, 2016 8:21 PM

The joke is over. Done. Finished. Time to quit laughing. What a creepy character this man has turned out to be.

After that comment accusing Israel of “killing 10,000 innocents in Gaza,” Bernie Sanders is no longer a cuddly, lovable old man. His ability to charm millions, this time with an awesome blood libel, Bernie, this Communist Senator from Vermont, is now officially the creepiest and most dangerous man in America.

He speaks. People listen. Millions pay attention. He tells socialist fairytales, people swoon.

So now he’s into full-blown “Jews poisoned the wells” territory. Now, as Jewish students are being tormented on campus by BDS and SJP bullies, and as BDS piles up boycott-Israel wins throughout the United States and around the world -- Bernie piles it on with stereotypes borrowed from the darkest of the Dark Ages.

Bernie presents a clear and present danger. He is toxic and he is poisonous. Who thought the day would come when I would root for Hillary, at least among the decaying Democrats. Last night he won Wisconsin. That makes it seven out of eight primaries for his campaign, which brought in $44 million in a single month.

His influence is big, especially toward the young. His lies are bigger.

This Pied Piper has turned to indoctrinating a whole new generation with eye-rolling canards.

From rally to rally, he corrupts everywhere he goes. Every word of his is false.

Bernie does not know what the hell he is talking about. But he keeps on talking and people keep listening and believing this mamzer.
Overnight and day after day, kids who know nothing are being converted to smash-mouth Jew-hatred by an old coot who knows nothing.

He told the New York Daily News that he really wasn’t sure what happened in Gaza back in 2014. "Anybody help me out here, because I don't remember the figures, but my recollection is over 10,000 innocent people were killed in Gaza. Does that sound right?"

No, Bernie, that sounds wrong – and we won’t even begin to explain that at the time Israel was being bombarded with thousands of rockets from Hamas in Gaza. More than two million Israelis had to run for their lives every hour on the hour until Israel finally had to do something to make this stop –here for the drama of it all.

In other words, Bernie does not know what the hell he is talking about. But he keeps on talking and people keep listening and believing this mamzer.

The kids who flock to him now have anti-Semitism validated through Bernie Sanders, the one-man wrecking crew who knows nothing about anything. His interview at the Daily News, as
ridiculed here by The Washington Post, revealed him to be clueless on everything. Everything!

On the economy, on Wall Street, on social issues, on foreign affairs, he proved himself to be totally in the dark. Bernie Sanders is a fraud.

He spent nearly two decades in Congress. He accomplished nothing. Zero. Except to promote Communism (along with anti-Semitism) as a cure for America.

Thanks, Bernie, and do fill us in.

Tell us more about the glories of Stalin and the Castro brothers and the millions they’ve murdered and enslaved to make that system work.

Call it socialism, call it Communism, it never worked and it never will, and whatever our ills, we’ll keep Democracy, thank you.

Bernie Sanders is a joke. The question is whether the kids are really buying his routine or whether they’re laughing at him.

He is what we used to call “a happening.” He’s fun. He’s a sit-in. He’s a love-in. He is flower power.

He brings back the 1960s, which gave us the good, the bad and the ugly.

Bernie Sanders has chosen ugly. That may be all he has to give.

Even among the Democrats there ought to be something better than this creep whom we now find so terrible and so absolutely dangerous.
