MIXED-UP JEWS - DECEMBER 31, 2015

Israeli Jews are an inconvenience to American Jews.

Published: Thursday, December 31, 2015 6:08 AM

A particular reader from Israel sent me an email in praise of Arutz Sheva op-eds (not just mine) and that should have been enough.

He then said that he bought and read two of my books, but wanted to talk mostly about “The Bathsheba Deadline.” A teacher of Literature himself, he found it “stunningly and surprisingly good from an American writing about Israel,” and that too should have been enough. A satisfied customer! A writer needs to hear no more.

But there is always more.

A book, especially a novel, can fall apart if it’s in the wrong company and as I have said before, when you hold a book in your hands you hold the writer’s life in your hands. Writing is prayer. But I took part in an exchange of emails with this reader in the hope that we might each learn something.

Specifically as to the book’s hero Jay Garfield, here came the complaint:

“What took him so long to come around, to become a man in full?”

“But he did come around, yes?”

“Yes, but meanwhile he was a mixed-up Jew,” my reader wrote back, somewhat too harshly, I thought. Ouch…and not the first time I heard this.

“But even Moses was a mixed-up Jew.”

“What do you mean?” he asked.

It took years for Moses to finally become a man in full, and finally the greatest. But at the start he was unsure, hesitant, doubtful and as it is with Moses, so it is with any hero. Heroes seldom come fully developed and if they do, then we learn nothing. We have no process, no theme, no obstacles, no growth, no plot.

Any book featuring a hero needs to show the hero stumbling until he finds his path, his clarity, his mission and finally, perhaps, his glory. A story that begins with a man who already has all the answers and has nothing left to pursue ends on page one. There’s no place to go.

It’s a step-by-step process for a book and it’s the same for real life, where every day we find mixed-up Jews.

So let’s not get too judgmental on Jay Garfield who, until he found his cause and fought his fight, simply mirrors an entire generation of mixed-up Jews.

Particularly here in America.

For too many American Jews, Israel is a country they know through politics.

They know nothing about the love story, the romance of a Land and its People. After 2,000 years of prayers and yearning, here it came:

A Homecoming like no other made through sacrifice and miracles.

How did American Jews get so mixed-up? As a novelist, I explore the motives and the adventures through the writing. Call it fiction, but I don’t make things up. I write what is given. Even your imagination comes from a place you don’t know. I used Jay Garfield to find the answers so that even he was stunned by what he found.

To say Kaddish for a friend, he finds himself in a Manhattan synagogue where in the morning they dutifully praise Jewish Jerusalem through prayers, supplications to “speedily re-establish the throne of David in Jerusalem.” In the evening the same congregants return to praise and applaud speeches from J-Street and BDS to dethrone David and Jerusalem.

These and other such congregations are surely mixed-up and it comes from having a heart, but in the wrong place.

Jews fighting back are still a strange and unwelcome sight to the world all over and therefore an inconvenience to American Jews who fail to realize that the Jewish State, outnumbered 400 to one, is their strength and overall redemption. They think they have it made and don’t want it spoiled.

Playwright Tony Kushner, who spun moral relativism into the Spielberg film “Munich,” is reported to have said that it would have been better if there were no Israel. He spoke for quite a few and I got pretty much the same message from an editor I wrote for years ago in South Jersey.

He said his readers ate up what I wrote but objected to everything I wrote for being so right-wing. Israel needs to make concessions.

Concessions until when – until Israel is wiped off the map?

No, the Jews may have their little country, so long as they behave. Yes, it would be better if somebody else ran the country, the Arabs.

Then there would not be so much explaining to do. Then we, here in America, would not have to keep apologizing. So goes the thinking.

Jews born in this country, in America – perhaps that’s the missing link. They don’t know the before and the after.
American Jews don’t want to rock the boat. American Jews don’t want trouble.

For my part, I have many flaws, but being a mixed-up Jew is not one of them. I came to America from another place.

I knew what it was like when there was no Israel and I knew what it was like when suddenly there was an Israel and there was no relativism about my feelings. I felt elated. Others of my generation are apt to feel the same sense of elation and gratitude. We get the romance.

Jews born in this country, in America – perhaps that’s the missing link.

They don’t know the before and the after.

They never knew what it was like being without a country. They always had America.

Maybe they can be given some slack for being mixed-up Jews. Maybe.

Jay Garfield isn’t even Jewish; his father, yes, not his mother. But he does experience a grand awakening. He becomes Jewish. He earns it through his trials.

I began the writing soon after Daniel Pearl was beheaded in Pakistan. Daniel Pearl was a newspaperman.

But he was murdered by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed for being Jewish.

That, in part, was my grand awakening.

I would write a journalistic hero to mirror Daniel Pearl and the few who were his equal that I knew from the newsrooms to the battlefields.

He uttered these final words Feb. 1, 2002 just before the cleaver slashed across his neck.

“I’m a Jewish American. My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I’m Jewish.”

Nothing mixed-up about such courage that delivers a powerful message to us to this day.

THROW BACK THURSDAY - SPIELBERG IS NO FRIEND TO ISRAEL - DECEMBER 5, 2005

You never want to be labeled a fan of Israel in today’s Hollywood
Jack Engelhard - Ynet News  December 5, 2005

It remains to be seen, literally, if Steven Spielberg has switched sides, from kosher ("Schindler's List"), to treyf. His movie, "Munich," will be opening in a few days and early word has it that he has indeed gone "Hollywood." This means that he's joined the trend to the Left, and that's the way to go if you want to do lunch in that town again.

If advance screenings prove accurate (the movie is set to open December 23), Spielberg has used the Olympic Massacre of 1972 to send a message that brings to mind the words of MGM tycoon Louis B. Mayer: "Movies are for entertainment. If you want to send a message, send a telegram."

Regardless, Spielberg's message is that the bad guys who murdered 11 Israelis are not all that bad, and that the Israeli secret services that pursued the killers, the good guys, are not all that good. They're troubled by second thoughts. There isn't much difference, according to Spielberg's telegram, between killers and avengers.

Observers of our culture may conclude that Spielberg has bought an even bigger script than the one at hand, featuring moral equivalency as a sub-title.

No doubt Spielberg is serious, and that's the problem. People aren't buying popcorn as much as they used to and altogether box office numbers are down. People want to laugh, or cry. They don't want to be sold. I know this from experience. I still get questions about "Indecent Proposal." Why did I let Hollywood make those changes?

Well, when you sell a novel to Hollywood it's gone with the wind. Hemingway suggested that we (writers) throw our novels over the Hollywood border, grab the money and run. That's more or less what I did.

The interior voice of my novel - "what would you do for a million dollars – would you sell your wife for a night?" - was the Arab-Israeli conflict, mostly on the side of Israel. For Paramount Pictures, that was too much of a message, so they made changes, and guess what, I agree.

What about Exodus?

Or rather, I agreed then, not so much now. For some time I've asked this question - would Leon Uris get "Exodus" to the screen in this climate? I keep coming up with the same answer. No! Things have changed and not only for movies but for books as well. Again, personal experience, as with my latest, "The Bathsheba Deadline," that's running as a serial on Amazon.com. Lucky for me that Amazon.com came along, the largest of them all put together.

But not so fast. The novel was turned down by a dozen New York publishers for being too pro USA and much too Jewish, too pro-Israel. One top publisher said it plainly, or half plainly: "I really got caught up in your novel; enjoyed it very much; powerful stuff. But I will not make an offer, and I think you know why."

Yes, I knew why and I know why.

Don't look at me. A thousand other writers of my persuasion have had similar brush-offs from New York and Hollywood. Tom Clancy writes a novel that features Arabs as the bad guys, but Hollywood, for reasons of sensitivity or box office, conveniently changes these villains to neo-Nazis. "The Sum of all Fears" may well have been titled "The Fear of all Sums."

French-Israeli filmmaker Pierre Rehov travels deep into jihad territory, exposes the universe that indulges and glorifies terrorism, and he's been getting some attention, but he is struggling to find a major distributor for his eye-opening documentaries.

Spielberg has no such problems, first because he's Spielberg, and second, in the case of "Munich," he's produced a baby that Barbra Streisand, Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Stone could love - and these people can do lunch in Hollywood any time they want, and maybe that's what it's all about.

Telegrams should go back and forth

In Hollywood today, where David is Goliath and Goliath is David, you never want to be labeled a conservative or a fan of Israel. Hollywood is all about being trendy and Israel is not the trend. You won't get invited to the right parties and you won't win any Oscars if your heart bleeds for a nation that is always on the verge of being wiped off the map.

My problem? If Uris could not get "Exodus" funded in an atmosphere that still reeks of "Durban" (and where is the movie about all that, Steve?) then Spielberg should not be green-lighted for "Munich." Sure, Hollywood, go ahead, make your day. Show us their side of the story, but what about our side?

Where is the counterpoint? If you are trending toward political themes, yes, that is your right, but where is our Right, in which decidedly I mean the Right side of politics that has us walking with a target on our backs, meaning those of us who differ on moral equivalency and other trends?

Jews pioneered Hollywood. If, as our enemies say, we own Hollywood, well, here's the plot twist - we have lost Hollywood, and we have lost Spielberg. Spielberg is no friend of Israel. Spielberg is no friend of truth. His "Munich" may just as well have been scripted by George Galloway.

Yes, Hollywood, send a telegram, but, to communicate and to get the message fair and straight, telegrams should go back and forth.

IRAB NUKE DEAL – OBAMA PITCHES HOLLYWOOD BOX OFFICE POISON - JULY 30, 2015

Not so long ago when I was there in Hollywood to discuss another movie, I asked a producer when the town would finally open its eyes to Islamic terrorism. Where’s that movie? The man was quick with his answer: “When a bomb hits Paramount studios, that’s when.”

At this rate, that real-life drama could be coming soon enough to Hollywood and to a theater near you.
How do you sell a lousy script that’s been passed around from producer to producer with no buyer in sight?

The wording is unintelligible. The scenario is unfathomable. The characters are disreputable.
Where’s the box office for this clunker that’s being peddled as the Iran Nuke Deal?

But even the most despicable screenplay can be justified when the biggest tycoon sits in Washington and is named Barack Obama. He gets what he wants. He wants this baby sold. It did not take much arm-twisting to get Morgan Freeman and Jack Black to start a Yes campaign for this flop.

We can expect long lines hailing and heiling this upcoming disaster flick because the Boss says do as I say.

Some in Hollywood see the Iran Deal for what it is, a danger to the business, the town, the nation and the entire world. They want it stopped. It’s doubtful they will get as many signatures as Morgan
Freeman’s Vote Yes petition. Maybe a handful of Hollywood’s elite will vote No, Thanks. We have enough Special Effects. We do not need actual bombs.
Jon Voight, Clint Eastwood and we should expect Kirk Douglas and Michael Douglas to declare No, not in my name.

Where’s the box office for this clunker that’s being peddled as the Iran Nuke Deal?
Anybody else? Streisand? Spielberg? Not likely. Neither them nor the thousands who do lunch at Spago.

But hear this: When Hollywood flew off to Canada for the Toronto Film Festival, something else happened. The Festival honored the Israeli art of film making and sooner than you can say Danny Glover, amovement got started to boycott Israeli films and since that was so easy – why not boycott Israel altogether?

Moguls, producers, directors, actors – within an hour more than a thousand were in line behind Jane Fonda to sign the petition denouncing the Jewish State.
So this is not your father’s Hollywood. There was a time when the “Rat Pack” were kings and Frank Sinatra was Boss and Israel was in style.

Yesterday’s “Exodus” in the steady hands of Otto Preminger became today’s “Munich” in the fearful hands of Steven Spielberg.

Preminger boldly produced a movie with a strong pro-Israel theme – taken from Leon Uris.

Spielberg gave us lame and despicable moral equivalency – taken from Tony Kushner’s anti-Israel screenplay, for which, back then, I wrote this: “In Hollywood today, where David is Goliath and Goliath is David, you never want to be labeled a conservative or a fan of Israel.

“Hollywood is all about being trendy and Israel is not the trend.

“You won't get invited to the right parties and you won't win any Oscars if your heart bleeds for a nation that is always on the verge of being wiped off the map.”

Plus this: “Jews pioneered Hollywood. If, as our enemies say, we own Hollywood, well, here's the plot twist - we have lost Hollywood.”

To make sure that his Iran Deal gets a green light, John Kerry has already warned the Jewish people that they will be blamed if the deal goes down.

That is an ancient blood libel and if he is seeking frightened people to back his ungodly cause, he knows Hollywood is the place.

Spielberg’s Misplaced Jewish Heart

January 29, 2015

Some time ago a neighbor got himself a job as an intern for a movie being made here in New York. He’s still a young kid.

“Guess who came on the set?” he phoned, gushing.

“Julia Roberts.”

“No! Steven Spielberg. Should I tell him I know you, the author of ‘Indecent Proposal?’ He’ll go nuts.”

“Yes he will,” I said, “and that’ll be the end of your career in the movies.”

Earlier, I had written my thoughts on his film “Munich.” I wasn’t polite and neither was he in response. Made headlines.

If you understand terrorists, was my conclusion, you are a terrorist. To understand is to justify. If you do not hate evil, you are evil.

At the time, and maybe still today, Spielberg was the most powerful director in Hollywood, and though writing novels is my business, it does not hurt when Hollywood makes an offer you can’t refuse. Trifling with a force like Spielberg can prove ruinous but fortunately “Indecent Proposal” had already been done and done up big by Director Adrian Lyne. So I was safe for that page to screen.

Next in line I have “The Bathsheba Deadline” and it will be done by someone soon, but not by Spielberg, unless he wants to try me on this book’s uncompromising take on Radical Islam. Much too pro-Israel, this novel, to be sure, and much too tough on leftists in Hollywood and elsewhere.

The movie “Munich” was about Israelis going after the Islamic monsters who committed the atrocity at the 1972 Munich Olympics. In cold blood they murdered 11 Israeli Olympians. Israel tracked down these beasts one at a time. If you loved justice, you cheered.

Not so in “Munich.” This was the worst movie Spielberg ever made and maybe the only bad movie he ever made. From the script mostly done by Tony Kushner, the movie gave us views of justified Arabs and dubious Israelis – “both sides of the story” in other words.

Or in the words of Kushner himself, through interviews: “I have a problem with the idea of a Jewish state. It would have been better if it never happened.”

Thus did this Jewish screenwriter avail himself of literary license to twist and malign a triumphant story to suit his personal prejudices.

Kushner is on record accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing – and THIS is the man Spielberg chose to write the script for a film that should have been about Israeli heroism. This should have been like “Entebbe “– Jews browbeaten and down beaten over the centuries, finally capable of avenging their tormentors.

Not here with Spielberg and the man he says he trusts more than anyone else when it comes to Israel – Kushner.

30 million watched “Munich” (though still a box office flop) and came away no friends of the Jewish State, no fans of Israel.
Here’s what set off my public spat with Spielberg, when about “Munich” I wrote elsewhere: “Jews pioneered Hollywood. If, as our enemies say, we own Hollywood, well, here's the plot twist - we have lost Hollywood, and we have lost Spielberg. Spielberg is no friend of Israel. Spielberg is no friend of truth.”

I would write it again, even though maybe I have mellowed. Spielberg is a good man. Just this morning I heard him say how worried he is about the rise of anti-Semitism. Nice. Then I saw him taking part, again this morning, at the memorial services at Auschwitz for Holocaust Remembrance Day, where he appeared to be truly stricken by the testimonies among some of the 300 survivors present.

I know about the archive he has built for remembrances of the Shoah. I think it cost him millions. But how many people will see those archives? Thirty thousand?
But 30 million watched “Munich” (though still a box office flop) and came away no friends of the Jewish State, no fans of Israel.

Spielberg is a great director. Think of his power to persuade and to move emotions.
Imagine if he were to use his genius to light up the screen with the adventure that is Israel, a nation raised from the ashes to proclaim liberty for all.

Imagine this place where Jews can dream, live unafraid and provide the world with the most glorious wonders in science and technology.

Where is that movie?

Where is the Jewish heart when it comes to the Jewish State?

What’s wrong with these people who only love us after we are dead?
