This Is Not Your Father’s America, Mr. Krauthammer
Over the years, only twice have I disagreed with Charles Krauthammer, my favorite commentator. First, way back, was when he supported the notion of splitting Israel in half, the two-state solution. Next?
That happened 8 hours ago when, at his regular spot on FoxNews, Krauthammer said that Bernie Sanders, the Democrat contender for the White House doesn’t stand a chance.
America has never voted for a Socialist and never would, said Krauthammer, whose nostalgia I share.
Too bad for both of us that the America we remember is going fast. Anybody can become president, as we know to our dismay.
Anything can happen in a country that’s changing by the hour. People we don’t know keep coming in from countries where they used to burn our flag.
Our very landscape has a different face. Church steeples have become minarets.
Back then Bruce Jenner was a man. Today Bruce Jenner is a woman.
In the America we remember people watched “Ozzie and Harriet” and swooned to Frank Sinatra.
Today it’s the “Kardashians” and cabbies in New York and other big cities never heard of Old Blue Eyes.
They don’t know our music, our heroes, our culture, our language, but we keep bringing them in, legally and illegally.
Many are good, decent, hard-working people, but many are not, and we do not trouble ourselves to sort them out.
They don’t know the infield fly rule or anything else about baseball.
Our very landscape has a different face.Church steeples have become minarets.
Today we call them rap stars and pay them millions.
Back then Americans went to drive-in movies, knew the corner grocer, expected the smiling gas station kid to check for oil, exchanged howdy with their neighbors, cheered for DiMaggio and Mantle and rooted for Israel.
In today’s America throngs of university students demand boycott and divestment from Israel.
Israel, our greatest ally, needs to get ready for unrequited love. America is not the same for Israel and it is not the same for America. Read this.
Our fathers would not recognize the America of today, nor would they wish to. Neighborliness was a virtue. People talked across the backyard fence.
Today we text. We call that conversation. Democrats used to be the good guys.
Martin Luther King was an admired American. Today it’s Al Sharpton.
Rita Hayworth only had to remove one glove to turn us on.
Americans never used to press one or press two to speak their native language, which used to be English.
In the America of the past Joe College was actually named Joe. Today it’s just as likely to be Tsarnaev.
Our culture, Americana, keeps sinking. We are still a great nation, an exceptional country.
But we’re becoming another place, a confusion of tongues. We’re becoming many nations under many gods.
The generation of our fathers is being outmaneuvered, outnumbered, outvoted.
Anything is possible. But at this rate that’s nothing to be cheerful about.
