CHARLESTON TO JERUSALEM: TOUCHED BY EVIL - JUNE 23, 2015

Charleston to Jerusalem: Touched by Evil

No root cause. That was pure evil that walked into Charleston South Carolina’s Emanuel A.M.E. Church last Thursday and murdered nine African-American congregants at prayer. The search for the killer ended quickly – he is young, white and a racist of the worst kind.

He was caught. He confessed.

But for some people (namely Liberals) that wasn’t enough. They need something or somebody to blame other than the assassin.

Makes their day when, cued by Obama, they can find any pretext to paint every single American with the brush of racism.

Immediately after the massacre, they blamed guns. They blamed the Confederate Flag. They blamed Republicans and to make sure that nobody gets a pass they eyed all “white people” as the usual suspects. They blamed everything except what it was, the fact that some individuals are just plain rotten. Evil exists, period.

We call it the absurdity of the human condition.

We waited for a leader to give us healing and calm. We are still waiting.

A moment after the news broke a nation was stricken with despair. We waited for a leader to give us healing and calm.

We are still waiting. We are still waiting for a leader to console us whenever these tragic events occur. But this President is not that man.

Rather than offer words of comfort, last week he chose to scold us once again, saying: “Let’s be clear: At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency.”

Clear enough? We are all at fault. We all pulled the trigger. We all have blood on our hands, according to our Scolder in Chief.

We the People are simply not good enough for this President. He prefers other people in other lands.

“Racism is still part of our DNA,” says our twice-elected African-American President with no hint of irony.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren remains the newsmaker of the hour through his revelations about Obama’s scornful attitude towards Israel. But Oren, in his book, “Ally,” likewise has words over Obama’s disdain for America.

“More alarming for me still,” writes Oren about Obama’s first book, “were Obama’s attitudes towards America.

“Vainly, I scoured ‘Dreams from My Father’ for some expression of reverence, even respect, for the country its author would someday lead. Instead, the book criticizes Americans for their capitalism and consumer culture, for despoiling their environment and maintaining antiquated power structures.”

If America “can’t get no satisfaction” from this President, Israel has no chance.

Last year it happened in Jerusalem. Four rabbis at prayer were hacked to death by Palestinian Arab terrorists, but with this difference; these murderers were affiliated. They were motivated to commit bloodshed from the schooling they received at the feet of their political and religious leaders.

This past Friday the same collective hatred against the Jewish people took the life Danny Gonen, 25, who stopped to help an Arab in need.

In need to kill a Jew, as it turned out. In Israel such attacks are never from a “lone gunman.” They learn to hate and kill from mother’s milk.

We find nothing like this in Charleston. The killer acted alone. It was personal. He was attached to no larger movement.

He was committed to no cause other than to do evil. Ditto, for example, theassassins of JFK and John Lennon.

Most often the search for conspiracies and larger motives come up empty.

Some people are just that, wicked, and no other excuse or explanation will do. The “problem of evil” has been with us since the beginning.

King David wrestled with this throughout his Psalms.

Still, there is no solution. But we could use a leader gifted with an understanding heart to guide us through our most trying times.

Instead, we’ve got what we’ve got. We are on our own against the random brutes who stalk our world.

BERNIE SANDERS FACES NPR McCARTHYISM - JUNE 12, 2015

NPR’s 20 million weekly listeners got a taste of what McCarthyism must have been like back in the 1950s.

That’s when people were ruined by insinuation and if that wasn’t enough, it was demanded of them to “name names.”

In other words, they were expected to bring down friends and family members as well.

Some may remember this type of bloodcurdling language from the Wisconsin Senator: “I have here in my hand a list…”

The “list” (of allegedly “known communists”) was meant to terrify people, and it did.

Those tactics came back in style a few days ago when WAMU radio host Diane Rehm used a tone that sounded like a Joe McCarthy witch-hunt.

In an interview with Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders she stated as fact, “Senator, you have dual citizenship with Israel.”

Sanders, the junior Senator from Vermont, Jewish and politically Independent, was asked a question that never came up for Obama at NPR.

Rehm’s program begins at WAMU and is broadcast throughout NPR’s 900 affiliate stations. In his Village Voice confessional, “Why I Am No Longer A Brain-Dead Liberal,” playwright David Mamet scored National Public Radio's “National Palestinian Radio.”

Sanders, therefore, should not have been totally amazed at finding an interview turned into an inquisition.

“Well no,” Sanders protested. “I’m an American.”

Sanders is a self-described Democratic Socialist. He is running for the White House as a Democrat and is expected to have no chance against Hillary Clinton for the nomination. On Israel, Sanders snubbed

Benjamin Netanyahu when the Israeli Prime Minister addressed Congress.
His platform, it’s been said, would cut aid to Israel. He’s on record as saying Israel “overreacted” to the 30,000 rocket attacks that came from Gaza.

Still, he gets no favors or soft-pedaling from the PLO-favoring Left. Proof that even anti-Israel Jews are still Jewish no matter what side they take.

But as a young man, Sanders, now 73, spent a few months on a kibbutz.

Was she asking Sanders to “name names?” Was she asking him to denounce “fellow travelers?”
Is that what got him flagged by NPR? Or, forNPR, is friendship with Israel a bridge too far?

Sanders appeared stunned by Rehm’s faulty information. Rehm explained that she found him on a “list.”

Shades of McCarthy? Or did the “list” fall into the hands of Diane Rehm from the new and improved McCarthyism.

"That's some of the nonsense that goes on in the Internet,” Sanders replied, obviously irritated at being ambushed by BDS rumormongering.

Rehm apologized several times during the interview and even after the interview for presenting as fact erroneous material.

But it gets worse.

Rehm persisted, asking Sanders if there are other members of Congress who may have dual citizenship, or is it “part of the fable.”

Fables linked, no doubt, to the BDS business of spreading falsehoods throughout Social Media…and whatever works to scandalize and oppress.

Was she asking Sanders to “name names?”  Was she asking him to denounce “fellow travelers?”
This does stink of McCarthyism.

“I honestly don’t know [about others],” Sanders hotly replied during his cross-examination.

The experience may have taught Mr. Sanders that being on “their side” is no safe harbor. He should not have been caught by surprise.

But it can work both ways.

As a successful journalist and as a proud Arab-American, Diane Rehm ought to know better than to touch her very own third rail.

JERUSALEM DOUBLE CROSS - JUNE 10, 2015

Jerusalem Double Cross

Says the clueless publisher to the writer in a famous New Yorker cartoon, “So what was it, the best of times or the worst of times, Mr. Dickens?”

Not so funny today. It’s been a rough week. Make that a rough month, even a rough year. Would you believe a rough century?

But lately, if you’re Jewish, it’s been especially hard. It’s been one damned thing after another, and now, as if it couldn’t get any worse, they tried to wipe Jerusalem off the Jewish map. The Supreme Court, to refresh, ruled that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel, or any part of the Jewish State.

Jerusalem was always the prize. Read this, especially pages 280 to 281 to see how the double cross gets done.

The voting ran 6 to 3, and the three Jewish Justices sided with the majority. Proof once again that the phrase “Court Jew” is no compliment.

The nightmare (for me) began with a phone call from Israel: “Did you hear what the Supreme Court did?”

Can’t trust the three Jewish judges, but two Italians tried to come to Jerusalem’s rescue – but failed.
“Don’t tell me.”

But he told me and my first response went like this: “Figures. You guys have got to do something about your High Court. They’re a bunch of…”

“No! Your High Court. The Supreme Court of the United States, for crying out loud.”

This also figures. They usually cave for Obama, as they did for his national healthcare program.

For Jerusalem, the three who dissented were Chief Justice Roberts, Justices Alito and Scalia.
Can’t trust the three Jewish judges, but two Italians tried to come to Jerusalem’s rescue – but failed.

So they’re still dancing in Ramallah, whooping it up at The New York Times and wherever anti-Semites can be found.

It was a good day to be Mahmoud Abbas or Mahmoud anybody.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest told the press that Mr. Obama was happy with the Court’s decision.

Jerusalem, first established by King David as Israel’s capital 3,000 years ago, is ripe for the taking as long as you’re not Jewish, like David.

Hamas is welcome to it, as is Fatah, Islamic Jihad, and Islamic State – though nobody says it quite that way.

But some of us are not stupid. We do not need everything spelled out.

So the Supreme Court of the Unites States declared Jerusalem an orphan, no father, no mother, and, to their thinking, what else is beside the point?

That history begins with the Hebrew Bible, the Torah, and that both Christianity and Islam were birthed from Jewish Scriptures, which places Jerusalem as the undivided, eternal capital of Israel. They may try to delete history but it can’t be done. Their liturgy repeatedly bequeaths Jewish preeminence over Jerusalem.

Their books are taken from our Book and even our prophets they can’t deny. The paperwork’s been done.

Nor can they deny the prophecies that place Jerusalem in Jewish hands. To begrudge Israel’s full rights to Jerusalem is to forget that today’s shekel is the same currency Bathsheba used to buy

Solomon a new pair of shoes when she went shopping for her young son in the City her husband built.

Which brings us to an uncomfortable moment. Yes, Obama was pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision. What about the Prime Minister of Israel? Surely Benjamin Netanyahu was not pleased. In speech after speech he avows Jerusalem as Israel’s eternal capital. Nice words.
Meanwhile, however, since 2013 the Netanyahu government has imposed a construction freeze upon eastern Jerusalem.

No Jewish homes may be built in the vicinity where Solomon built the Temple and where David wrote the Book of Psalms…in Hebrew.

So, we have no choice but to assume that Israel’s leadership itself doubts its jurisdiction over its own capital.

How then can anyone expect the United States Supreme Court to think and act differently?

Until Israel’s leaders proclaim decisively and universally that it’s Jerusalem or bust, the losing streak will continue.

To keep Jerusalem safe, it’s time for Israel to forget the kindness of strangers. Israel’s acting foreign minister Tzipi Hotovely has it right.

It’s time to speak up resolutely for Biblical Jerusalem and erase any weakness or doubt.

AMERICAN PHAROAH (SIC): JEWISH HORSE WINS TRIPLE CROWN - JUNE 7, 2015

American Pharoah (Sic): Jewish Horse Wins Triple Crown

Happily, I can report that the long wait is over. American Pharoah (they misspelled it, not me) won thoroughbred racing’s most desired and elusive prize when he overcame seven other colts in New York’s Belmont Stakes to become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.

To my relatives in Israel who know nothing about racing, take my word for it, this is a very big deal. America was on shpilkis. History happened in a flash.

More than 90,000 watched it happen in person and 300 million watched it on TV. You can bet on that, and most did.

Accompanied by Chabad spiritual leaders, the jockey Victor Espinoza visited the Rebbe’s gravesite beforehand for moral and divine support.
American Pharoah zoomed to the lead and triumphed gloriously wire-to-wire in a feat that was, for many, the thrill of a lifetime.

“Oh my G-d!” tweeted Jewish actress Debra Messing…”unbelievable!…so exciting!…crying…no idea why.” She spoke for the nation.

To my religious relatives in Israel, nu, what can I say? Yes, the race took place on Shabbat (the Sabbath). Yet the occasion was not entirely treyf.

Accompanied by Chabad spiritual leaders, the jockey Victor Espinoza visited the Rebbe’s gravesite beforehand for moral and divine support and the owners of the horse are Jewish, the Zayat family. Ahmed Zayat came to the United States from Egypt. He was born in Cairo and once here

Ahmed raised his family frum – religious. So he says and that’s good enough for me.

His son Justin runs the stable, which includes other champions, but nothing like American Pharoah.

The Zayats brought along this champion of champions up against worldly breeders that include Saudi kings, United Arab Emirate princes, plus the Queen of England. They weren’t here to test this horse, but the Zayats were, and they prevailed.

So were they in shul when all eyes were on their horse, or were they at the track? That’s none of our business.

But here’s the point -- this was a good day to be an American.

Things haven’t been going too well for us here in the United States. We’re beset by crooks and crookedness.

So here came a glorious animal, a thoroughbred, to illustrate that honesty, innocence, courage and virtue can lead to triumph.

The horse was asked to win first the Kentucky Derby, next the Preakness, and finally  the Belmont, and yes he did, he swept all three.

Only 11 other thoroughbreds did it in matches that date back over 100 years.

Finally, something came to make us cheer, all of us in a single voice.

We cheered grace and beautify as there are few creatures great or small as magnificent as these thoroughbreds and when a true champion comes along, everything stops. We rise up and gasp to admire greatness as it flashes before our eyes.

Plus, it was a good day to be Jewish. Things haven’t been going too well on that side, either.

But for yesterday’s crowning there were no boycotts. People yelled their lungs out, but only to root the horse home.

He heard us. Throughout America it was one big mazel tov.

Nobody got arrested. This wasn’t like FIFI. There were no scandals.

In racing, everything happens in two heart throbbing minutes. There is nothing to rival it for purity or thrills.

When American Pharoah crossed the finish line, millions were stricken with emotion. A sight to behold. Perfection -- so beautiful, so rare.

THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHER'S AMERICA, MR. KRAUTHAMMER - JUNE 2, 2015

This Is Not Your Father’s America, Mr. Krauthammer

Over the years, only twice have I disagreed with Charles Krauthammer, my favorite commentator. First, way back, was when he supported the notion of splitting Israel in half, the two-state solution. Next?

That happened 8 hours ago when, at his regular spot on FoxNews, Krauthammer said that Bernie Sanders, the Democrat contender for the White House doesn’t stand a chance.

America has never voted for a Socialist and never would, said Krauthammer, whose nostalgia I share.
Too bad for both of us that the America we remember is going fast. Anybody can become president, as we know to our dismay.

Anything can happen in a country that’s changing by the hour. People we don’t know keep coming in from countries where they used to burn our flag.

Our very landscape has a different face. Church steeples have become minarets.

Back then Bruce Jenner was a man. Today Bruce Jenner is a woman.

In the America we remember people watched “Ozzie and Harriet” and swooned to Frank Sinatra.
Today it’s the “Kardashians” and cabbies in New York and other big cities never heard of Old Blue Eyes.

They don’t know our music, our heroes, our culture, our language, but we keep bringing them in, legally and illegally.

Many are good, decent, hard-working people, but many are not, and we do not trouble ourselves to sort them out.

They don’t know the infield fly rule or anything else about baseball.

Our very landscape has a different face.Church steeples have become minarets.

Nobody used bad language in public. Those who did, we called them juvenile delinquents.

Today we call them rap stars and pay them millions.

Back then Americans went to drive-in movies, knew the corner grocer, expected the smiling gas station kid to check for oil, exchanged howdy with their neighbors, cheered for DiMaggio and Mantle and rooted for Israel.

In today’s America throngs of university students demand boycott and divestment from Israel.

Israel, our greatest ally, needs to get ready for unrequited love. America is not the same for Israel and it is not the same for America. Read this.

Our fathers would not recognize the America of today, nor would they wish to. Neighborliness was a virtue. People talked across the backyard fence.

Today we text. We call that conversation. Democrats used to be the good guys.

Martin Luther King was an admired American. Today it’s Al Sharpton.

Rita Hayworth only had to remove one glove to turn us on.

Americans never used to press one or press two to speak their native language, which used to be English.

In the America of the past Joe College was actually named Joe. Today it’s just as likely to be Tsarnaev.

Our culture, Americana, keeps sinking. We are still a great nation, an exceptional country.

But we’re becoming another place, a confusion of tongues. We’re becoming many nations under many gods.

The generation of our fathers is being outmaneuvered, outnumbered, outvoted.

Anything is possible. But at this rate that’s nothing to be cheerful about.

THE LAST JEW ON CAMPUS - JUNE 1, 2015

THE LAST JEW ON CAMPUS

His first name is Michael. This much I can say. But he’d rather not give his last name publicly or the name of the university under discussion.

So already we understand the problem. We know there’s a problem when Jewish kids are fearful…just plain fearful of being Jewish on campus.

But he’s not “religious.” His parents always vote for Democrats and he thinks like they do. He is a Liberal. He’s 20. Because he’s a Liberal he was offended by my book on Islam and the media. He gave it a one star review and now regretted doing so. The book got him thinking, he said. Would I please answer one central question?

“Why can’t the Israelis make peace with the Palestinians? This always comes up at school.”

His parents always vote for Democrats and he thinks like they do. He is a Liberal. He’s 20.

“Who brings it up?” I asked.

“The Palestinians. They keep asking us and we don’t have the answers, nothing they want to hear.”

“Never mind that there are no such people as Palestinians. Who does the talking on your side?”

“There’s me,” he said, “and plenty more of us, but dwindling.”

“How many on the other side?”

“Well,” Michael said, “we have about a thousand Palestinians on campus and we meet some of them regularly whenever we can.”

“How does it go?”

“It always ends badly. They keep asking the same question and they blame Israel for everything. Then they blame the rest of us.”

“Are these discussions done calmly?”

“There’s no reasoning, if that’s what you mean. We get shouted down. Sometimes there’s the threat of violence. Most of the girls left our group.”

“They’re afraid?”

“They end up crying. It’s totally frustrating.”

“Do you explain that in Israel a million and a half Palestinian Arabs have full rights, which they don’t enjoy in any Arab country?”

“That doesn’t work because they start hollering about apartheid and everything else. When we try to make our case they walk out. Or they drown us out shouting, you know, Allah Akhbar. We once invited a rabbi but they wouldn’t let him speak. Are we wrong to hold meetings with them?”
“Personally, I find that it never helps. But you’re in college, a place where everything should be discussed and debated.”

“Impossible. They just want to make their argument. If we don’t sign their boycott Israel petitions, BDS, they make life unbearable.”

 “Did you sign?”

“No. But others did.”

“How nice.”

“Sometimes I feel like the last Jew on campus,” Michael said.

“Are you afraid of them?” I asked.

“Yes. So is everybody. You can’t imagine the pressure. They run the campus.”

“So it’s hostile and there’s no talking with them.”

“We try,” Michael said, “and the more we try the worse it gets.”

“Will you keep trying?”

“I guess. I guess we have to. But it does seem hopeless.”

“So, Michael, what was your question?”
