HOW TO WRITE FOR SPOILED COLLEGE BRATS - APRIL 3, 2016

The generation gap? Or a new virulent form of pampered armchair liberalism?

Published: Sunday, April 03, 2016 10:50 AM

About 20 of them were helping out on some filming we were doing around Greenwich Village. Ivy League kids, most of them.

The Tulip Generation, I called them.

“The worse part of it all,” I told them, “is that you are all so serious. No sense of humor. Lighten up.”

Actually, we got along well. But miles apart on what’s going on in the world, especially on campus. One of them was BDS.

“So does that make me an anti-Semite?” He called himself Roger.

“Yes, Roger,” I said. “That makes you an anti-Semite. We can take this outside if you like.”

Now everybody got into the act – and it got heated. We were taking a coffee break at some spot on Bleecker.

Most of them claimed to read everything I wrote…books…movies…Arutz Sheva. I doubted this.

He quoted Justin Trudeau’s latest knee-slapper – “If you kill your enemies, they win.”
So they started quoting me. Okay!

One line from this book they all knew by heart – “How can you call it a cycle of violence when only one side does all the stabbing and suicide bombing?”

The girl named Pam said something that floored me: “What makes people like you so dangerous is that you write so well.”

I’ll forever try to figure out if that’s a compliment or what.

Then: “What about the Israelis and what they’re doing?”

I explained: “The Israelis are defending themselves against a confederacy of murderers just like the rest of the world. Only the Israelis were the first.”

So here we go. Janice said, “That kind of talk makes me uncomfortable.”

The typical Liberal retreat if something is not to their liking.

“Outside there in the real world, Christians your age are being raped, beheaded, caged and dunked till they drown – how’s that for uncomfortable?”

I continued, “There are no SAFE SPACES for 8-year-old girls forced to marry 45-year-old ayatollahs.”

“You don’t know how lucky you are,” I added. “Lucky, pampered and spoiled.”

They knew about that and even read about all that in my books and columns and sometimes even agree, except that I tend to come on too strong.

Better if I thought like Mark Zuckerberg whose whopper runs like this: “Love will defeat ISIS.” Did I hear about this?

“Yes, and I’m still laughing.”

From Clara: “What does it take to write a novel?”

“Blood, sweat and tears – and you haven’t even typed page one.”

She says she loved “Indecent Proposal,” the novel far better than the movie.

“So why,” she asked, “don’t you keep writing high literature? Why so much about Israel?”

“Because,” I said, “Israel is a great love story…the romance of a land and its people.”

“The Jewish people?”

“Totally.”

Melanie sighed: “Can’t you consider the Palestinians and their side? It’s far more complicated.”

“No,” I said. “Do you side with Daniel Pearl who was decapitated in Pakistan for being Jewish? Or do you side with the cannibals who did this?”

“That’s your choice,” I said, “and it’s not complicated.”

“Does it bother you as a novelist,” asked Karen, “to be repeatedly compared to Hemingway at a time when Hemingway is in decline for being so macho?”

Not at all, I replied. Writing is prayer. Hemingway prayed his way. I pray my way. (To the students on writing, I recommended this.)

Good kids, really. Simply, I suppose, the generation gap.

The Canadian kid mellowed when we shared the heartbreak of the once glorious Montreal Canadiens, and how they fell apart this season.

“I suppose,” he said, “you don’t like Trudeau.”

He quoted Justin Trudeau’s latest knee-slapper – “If you kill your enemies, they win.”

Oh come on! Really? Stupidity like that is dangerous.

I learned during this session that Obama can do no wrong. They can’t stand Hillary but would vote for her anyway. They love Bernie. They hate Trump. We need to be more tolerant of Islam. We need more migrants. Back to Trump, what do I think of Megyn Kelly and the dispute between them?

I said that I liked Megyn Kelly, “But hell hath no fury like Megyn Kelly scorned.” They were unhappy that in my columns I wrote so favorably for Trump.

The girl Tammy asked, “Do you mean everything you write?”

“Every single word.”

“How can you be sure you write the truth?”

“Because I write what’s given to me.”

Amazingly, they understood. They understood that in writing, something deeper happens.

One of them said I’ll need to keep up with them, the generation that’s coming. I’ll need to adjust.

It’s got nothing to do with the generation that is coming or going, I explained. What’s true is true whenever.

But for sure this is the generation that is coming, and coming soon to run our country and our world.

I’m worried.

FROM NEW YORK TO JERUSALEM: WE CAN'T GO ON. WE'LL GO ON - NOVEMBER 4, 2015

The wrong people seem to keep on winning so far, but losing is not an option.

To be Jewish and a New Yorker, Sunday was not our best day. In football, the Giants played their most perfect game, and still lost.

Even Eli Manning on his best day wasn’t good enough.

“That’s so unfair,” cried Broadway Lenny over the phone. “What happened to justice?”

There is no justice when the wrong people keep winning.

On top of that, same day, in baseball our beloved Mets got wiped out from the World Series. Some team from Kansas City did this to us.

“Kansas City?” wept Sol, another caller. “Where’s that?”

People keep calling me to cheer them up. On this day, wrong number. So it’s Janice on the phone.

“Another stabbing in Israel,” she says exasperated and heartbroken. “What’s happening? When did this START?”

It begins in the neighborhood where small events present the big picture.

So here I am at the gas station to fill up on gas and it’s always new people, different people, unfriendly people in charge. Moe is long gone. These people came from Iraq or some place. No speak English. So the guy, the attendant, right away he comes out of the booth with a scowl.

He’s already at the pump. Refuses the courtesy of coming over to the driver’s side, my side, to ask what I want. That used to be expected and how it used to work back when America was America. Small thing, I know. But it’s a big thing. I refuse to budge. This is still my country, gawdammit!

Now here he comes, sullen and furious. “Fill?” Yes, I say. “Cash?” Yes, but already the culture clash here on the corner.

So that’s what’s happening.

The customer is always wrong and it’s up to us, the infidels, to accommodate them, even in New York and most likely even in Kansas.
The customer is always wrong and it’s up to us, the infidels, to accommodate them, even in New York and most likely even in Kansas.

It’s their world and we’re only visiting. Ask the Israelis. They were the first to be told to behave like strangers in their own country.

Ask the Israelis what it’s like to share a country with people who glare at you with the hate in their eyes and with the shine of their knives for a chance to stab you in the back. A heartless world doesn’t care even at the sight of a 70-year-old Israeli victim of Arab terror lying face down in his own pool of blood. Damn. Damn. Damn.

As for when did this start – I can give you time and place. The time: June 5, 1968. The place: LA and The Ambassador Hotel.

That’s when and where a Palestinian Arab named Sirhan Sirhan assassinated Robert Kennedy.

Sirhan Sirhan fired the first shot. Since then it’s been the nightmare of Islamic encroachment day and night…here and round the globe.

People didn’t think, people didn’t know that jihad had come, and come to stay. We were shaken but not convinced. 9/11 convinced us, not all of us, not nearly so. Rather than hide in shame, Islamists began to strut and multiply. They dared – and in Tennessee children who may not be taught the Bible are being taught the Koran.

Or as I have it fully exposed in this thriller here, “The Koran has arrived and it has come to devour the Bible.”

Now it’s Linda Shelnutt on the email. She is troubled by all this and wonders how she’ll be able to navigate as a writer amid so much darkness. She’ll do fine. Linda is a wonderful writer and so very spiritual but she fears the “negative forces” enveloping her and her world. What do I think?

See the man who runs our country and see the man who runs our town and wonder no more about negative vibes.

The wrong people run this place. People who don’t know Sinatra are taking over.

As for the darkness, terrible times begin with anti-Semitism and soon no one is spared.

Linda is a booster for Donald Trump. She quotes him saying, “We don’t win anything anymore.”

So true. But to quote Samuel Beckett, “I can’t go on. I’ll go on.” Chin up. Losing is not an option. We can only afford to win.

SUPPOSE JEWS START BEHAVING LIKE THEIR ENEMIES? - OCTOBER 18, 2015

Jews can also play "Days of Rage."

So after my most recent column here in which I bewailed excessive Israeli compassion for its enemies, like the tendency to offer prompt medical attention for Arab terrorists, I heard back positively from many in my corner, but also from the emphatic naysayers – Jews afflicted by moral equivalency syndrome.

They say that being compassionate at all times begins in our Scriptures.  Yes, justice, justice shall you pursue. That’s our Torah.

But what about the other parts of justice – you know Moses and what he did to Egypt in retaliation for Egypt’s abuse of his people, the Hebrews?

They say that David was a man of peace. He sure was. But when attacked, David was a man of war. Read up on this. Read his Psalms. Try Psalm 59, for example, and find: “Rescue me from my foes, Dear Lord…rescue me from bloodthirsty men who surround me…Destroy them!”

Get the picture? (Never mind how times have not changed across 3,000 years.)

They say that compassion is woven in our character…agreed…and that compassion has served us well over the centuries. Baloney.

They say that if we do the measure for measure thing, why then, oh dear, we become like them; we stoop to their level and risk losing our humanity.

Well, humanity – there has not been much of that going around these days. As for the risk of becoming like them – here is what I say.

I say it is worth a shot.

Maybe if we behave (savagely) like them, if only once in a while, finally they will take the hint and leave us alone.

Mario Puzo figured that out while writing “The Godfather.” Get the rival “families” before they get you…and make the rest of them “fear you.”

Settling scores, it’s called.

Suppose, therefore, that Bibi gets a message out with these words: “Murdering Arabs is a national duty.”

Does that make you squirm? Me, too.

That is not Bibi, of course. That’s Abbas: “Murdering Jews is a national duty.” Yes Abbas said that and nobody cringed, nobody in the entire world.

Nobody squirmed.

Suppose Bibi announces that he does not want “filthy Arab feet” stomping holy Jewish ground.

Bibi never says this. Abbas did about “filthy Jewish feet.”  The world shrugs.

Suppose Israelis declare days of rage because Arabs stole Jewish land?

No days of rage from the Jews. Only from the Palestinian Arabs.

Suppose Israelis begin stabbing, stoning and shooting Arabs helter-skelter.

That is totally against Jewish practice.

But when the Palestinians practice it, CNN and the BBC and The New York Times will find words and pictures to justify Palestinian murderous behavior.

If the shoe were on the other foot, would the Israelis get the same generosity? Or is murdering Jews a Palestinian Arab entitlement?

John Kerry justified Palestinian rage on the settlements, the Jewish settlements.

Arabs, Mr. Secretary, are in a rage everywhere, about everything.

Naturally none of my recommendations has a chance and truly it is against my nature to desire such brutishness on the part of my people.

Besides, what would the neighbors say?

But I must say to my Liberal friends, those who asked, “Jack Engelhard, where is your heart” – did you ask John Kerry the same question?

Did you ask him why he equated Arab killers with Israeli victims, and why was he not OUTRAGED when he heard Abbas saying what he did?

Saying, “Murdering Jews is a national duty.”

Nobody squirmed? That’s right. Nobody squirmed. Nobody cringed.

Did you ask Mrs. Sun at the EU and Mr. Moon at the UN – where was their condemnation for that remark and for the Arab bloodlust that followed?

Take it from someone who knows.

Worry less about Jewish humanity. It is still in place. Worry more about their humanity, whatever there is of it.

HEMINGWAY'S SEARCH FOR THE TRUE SENTENCE (LISTEN UP BBC AND NYT) - OCTOBER 8, 2015

Taking special care to avoid telling the truth.

I still teach journalism and creative writing occasionally and I teach these rules: Keep it straight. Keep it simple. Keep it true.

I am not entirely original on this approach. On such basics, Ernest Hemingway, a newspaper reporter, and a fine one, before he became a great novelist, put it like this: “All you have to do is write one true sentence [at a time]. Write the truest sentence that you know.”

He added that sometimes it takes him an entire morning to find that one true sentence…but that it is always there if you search hard enough.

Imagine, then, how much more difficult it is to find or to create a truly convoluted sentence, crooked prose.

Imagine, in other words, the troublesome task confronting The New York Times and the BBC when faced with the truth, but now, due to prejudice and bigotry and to hell with fairness and objectivity, they must find the words to express exactly their prejudice and bigotry.

This must take more than a single morning, but after searching hard enough, the editors do find the means to twist the truth into a soft pretzel.

After all, there are deadlines to meet and lies to tell.

Over the past couple of weeks Arabs throughout Israel have been murdering Jews. That is a fact.

That is a fact that ought to be simple enough to communicate by print and by air by use of the most straightforward language.

Instead, to pick just one incident, the murder by Arabs of an Israeli couple driving with their children (who are orphaned in an instant), the Times and
Like this from the BBC: “Palestinian shot dead after Jerusalem attack kills two.” It was not Arabs who murdered two Israelis in cold blood... – rather it was Jerusalem.
the BBC chose a mix of perverted language and passive prose to cloud, to confound, and even to incite their readers and listeners against the Jews, the victims.

Like this from the BBC: “Palestinian shot dead after Jerusalem attack kills two.”

Therefore we are informed that it was not Arabs who murdered two Israelis in cold blood – rather it was Jerusalem.

Followed by like minded absurdity from the Times: ”Fear of new intifada accompany surge in Mideast violence.”

Tough to beat either of those for discombobulated writing. That’s an F-minus in any writing class, after the class stops laughing at such gobbledygook.

There is nothing funny, however, when such bad writing reaches the level of insanity and constitutes a crime against grammar.

What the Times is trying to say but refuses to say is: “Palestinians murder an Israeli couple sparking fears of a new intifada.”

But that would be a true sentence and a true sentence might be harmful…might let the truth out of the bag and in today’s journalism the truth must never be told, certainly not when it’s about Israel. The Arabs must never be offended and the Jews must never get the benefit of the doubt according to the rules that govern today’s Style Books ever since telling it straight went out of style.

Truman Capote on Jack Kerouac: “That’s not writing. That’s typing.”

Here, after all, is the crux, that we cannot begin to talk about the disservice being done to Israel until we understand the disservice being done to plain English. We know it from history that brutalizing the language is a first step toward brutalizing the people.

That’s where we find ourselves today and the sin is against both; the sin is against the Jewish State and the sin is against the etiquette of proper journalism. For the harrowing sinfulness about how this is done, I recommend the superb piece that was posted here yesterday by Arutz Sheva’s Ari Soffer.

Is there no shame at the BBC? Is there no decency at The New York Times?

What an insult to the craft that was done so well by Edward R. Murrow, Ben Hecht and Chicago’s Mike Royko. Each word meant something. They would be appalled at what’s happening to their honored trade. What a crime against the art practiced so beautifully by Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Salinger.

Clarity, above all clarity is what they pursued. Keep it straight. Keep it simple. Keep it true.

Isaac Babel wrote: “No steel can pierce the human heart so chillingly as a period at the right moment.”

You don’t have to be Jewish. None of us is safe when journalism, the profession we rely upon to illuminate, chooses to obscure. Chilling.

ISRAEL'S LONESOME FIGHT TO PROTECT AMERICA - OCTOBER 6, 2015

If you care about the safety, prosperity, liberty and security of the United States of America, it is your patriotic duty to support Israel.

We think it is far away. But it is closer than we think. Every stabbing, every firebombing, every gun shot from Palestinian Arabs against Israelis in and around Jerusalem, now happening day after day, is meant for us here in the United States, Jew and Christian alike.

The jihad, the nakba, the intifada, call it what you will, it is fever, it is intoxication, it is a war of terrorism from which no one can hide.

Those Palestinian knives and bullets are meant for us as we comfort ourselves thinking we are protected by geography. They don’t know geography.

They only know how to kill. They create nothing. They produce nothing. They invent nothing. They contribute nothing. They have no heart and they choose the best, the most beautiful among us to do the most harm and spill the most blood. They laugh and rejoice at their own deeds of depravity.

It is difficult to think of them as human. There are no signs of it.

Then they call us Islamophobic. But as we ask in these pages – “Can you be blamed for being a bigot if by their barbaric actions they turn you into one?”

The jihadist Palestinian murderers – they make no distinction among man, woman or child. Borders mean nothing to them. Watch them as they swarm one country after another. These same men intoxicated by jihad in Israel have their crazed eyes set on America. They have already taken Europe.

What happens in Israel does not stay in Israel.

It would be intelligent to consider ourselves warned.

On 9/11 we were warned, but still we think it is Israel that has a problem. Not our business, we say.

No, we have the same problem and it is very much our business if we care about the well
being of the United States.

Their debauched customs are nothing new in Israel and are becoming familiar within our own country of open borders. Schools in America now try to drop allegiance to the American flag for fear that it may offend or “exclude” others. Case in point, Jackson Hole Wyoming. Elsewhere in the Heartland kids are being taught the charms of Sharia. Schoolgirls are being told to wear the Islamic veil.

The FBI tells us that there are jihadist terror cells in every state.
The FBI tells us that there are jihadist terror cells in every state. Is this enough? No, 200,000 more of them are being brought in.

Are they harmless? But even if only one causes us harm our government has failed its sworn duty to preserve and protect.

Let’s be clear about this: If you love Israel for the sake of Israel, that is beautiful, but it is a personal choice, certainly my choice. But it is not required.

If you love Israel for the sake of America, this is required. If you care about the safety, prosperity, liberty and security of the United States of America, it is your patriotic duty to support Israel with all your heart, your soul and your might. Israel and only Israel stands at our frontier to fight our fight, which it does every day.

It is a lonesome fight because our leaders in politics have chosen to isolate the Jewish State because it is a Jewish State. We know this. We knew it when Mr. Obama enriched the mullahs of Iran with cash and bombs and when he instructed envoy Samantha Power to snub Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he spoke at the UN.

The same bigotry infests the news media from New York to London. The BBC was troubled about the “inconvenience” facing the Palestinian Arabs after Israel restricted their access to the Temple Mount for two days. There would be trouble, warned the BBC, and the trouble would be Israel’s fault.

The BBC was not troubled by Jewish blood running through the streets of Jerusalem. Nor was the BBC troubled by Jewish tears throughout the Land.

Those images were not shown – only sullen and inconvenienced Arabs were on display.

The EU is troubled. Those ministers never miss a chance to blame “both sides” when it is only one side that does the killing.

In fact nearly the entire gutless world keeps shaking hands with Fanatical Islamic Terrorism in order to pretend that nothing is happening, and if it is, let someone else, let Israel – let the Jewish State stand and fight for us so that we can sit back and worry about Palestinian Arabs being so terribly
inconvenienced.

In America it’s getting dangerous and it’s getting late but we still have choices. Israel is the only choice if decency still means anything.

[Additional and personal note: To the readers of my books who asked me to write something literary once in a while, get back to my novelistic roots, especially now on the eve of the Nobel Prizes, I did so as requested in an essay called “Why We Write.” I very much enjoyed writing the piece by popular demand. It was set to be published here but then the jihadist barbarians got busy and in an instant nothing made sense, at least nothing civilized, like literature. Perhaps another day when the fever passes, if even for a short while.)

BDS CAUGHT BEING TOO ANTI-SEMETIC – MATISYAHU WINS. THE PAIN IN SPAIN.....AUGUST 20, 2015

It appears that there’s a limit to anti-Semitism, so far as how much of it people can take.

Even anti-Semites can’t always swallow it in one lump. As everybody knows by now, reggae star Matisyahu was banned from performing at a big time reggae festival in Spain, this after BDS contacted the show’s sponsors, Rototom Sunsplash, with startling news. Matisyahu is Jewish.

So therefore do what comes naturally – boycott.

Apparently, this Jewish American artist is big in reggae circles. Jews and everybody else around the world cried foul, and Matisyahu was re-invited.

Spain apologized, the organizers blushed, claiming that they’d been coerced and intimidated by the Palestinian Arabs who run the BDS racket.

This is how they prove themselves to be tolerant and deserving of a Palestinian state – by heckling anyone who disagrees with them.

That won’t happen again, they promise – well, until BDS gets wind of the next Jewish performer, anywhere around the world.

That’s what they do, the BDS people. They troll the world to shut down or shout down Jews everywhere.

This is how they prove themselves to be tolerant and deserving of a Palestinian state – by heckling anyone who disagrees with them.

That is all they do. They invent nothing. They discover nothing. They cure nothing. They produce nothing. They contribute nothing. For all that, go to Israel. Go to the Jews. But on bullying and spreading hatred and discord around the world – on this the BDS Arabs and fellow termites are first-class. On this they are experts. After that, zero.

In Spain they did get their comeuppance and got exposed as they do in this thriller of a book.

Of Matisyahu, they demanded that he sign papers denouncing Israel. To his everlasting credit, he refused. He is not Israeli. He was born Matthew Paul Miller in West Chester, Pa., but as some are beginning to learn, Jews everywhere share Jacob’s Israelite birthright. Doesn’t matter where you were born.

Ask your local anti-Semite if West Chester is any different from Jerusalem when it comes to them laying it on.

Personally, the entire flap came as a surprise. I am embarrassed to admit this. Really – where have I been all these years? Until last Friday, I had never heard of Matisyahu. That’s understandable because we do not do much reggae around my home.

I will try it some day. That’s a promise. I already picture myself on the dance floor astonishing my friends to this additional talent.

He writes and dances, too?

Some good came out of this snafu in Spain. Chalk one up against BDS and its ferocious losers.

This time the world caught them in the act for being TOO anti-Semitic. That’s progress. Could be the start of something.

Or maybe not. But like dancing – one step at a time.

UNBEARABLE DOUBLE STANDARD AFTER ANTI-GAY ATTACK IN JERSUSALEM - AUGUST 2, 2015

Over the past six days, Israeli authorities answered 112 calls from Jewish civilians being attacked by Arabs.

Week after week Israelis are harassed, stoned, firebombed, run over, shot, knifed…but no headlines for this.

No stories at all. Zero. Nothing happened. It only makes noise when once every four years a single Israeli breaks bad.

All right, call it two Israelis who broke bad, one for the anti-Gay stabbing incident in Jerusalem followed by an arson attack against the Arab village of Duma, both crimes actively and gloatingly blamed on “religious Jewish extremists.” The piling on begins at once.

The Jewish Daily Forward, where Jane Eisner serves as editor, wants the entire “Settler” movement punished. (Eisner believes it’s a sign of “maturity” when American Jews abandon Israel.) Other fanatical Jewish leftists want Religious Israelis abolished. “Something must be done,” they say.

Over two solitary attacks.

In Israel, two or three Jews gone rogue constitutes “a crime wave.”

The EU, silent over the rape epidemic sweeping England, where Muslim men use Christian English women for sexual pastimes by numbers that are staggering, was quick to respond, insisting that Israel must show “zero tolerance” for  “Settler violence.”

Thank you for the lecture. But first tell it to the Palestinians for whom violence against Israelis is so unbearably routine.

The criminal acts allegedly committed by Israelis over the past few days are the exception, never the rule. Because they happen so infrequently, this is why the pictures travel so fast and the headlines are written so bold…and why once in a blue moon Israel’s enemies get to cheer and shout, “I told you so.”

There are no stories about Gays being stabbed in the Muslim world because there are no Gays in the Muslim world – none that are still alive.

The New York Times and Haaretz were thrilled at the chance to knock Israel as a nation of Gay intolerance – all because ONE MAN went berserk.

Israel’s hospitality to Gays is seldom remarked.

There are no stories about Gays being stabbed in the Muslim world because there are no Gays in the Muslim world – none that are still alive.

Within America we have the same sensationalized coverage but it’s against the police and it’s the same business of stereotyping.

Over the past eight days every TV network has played and replayed another white cop-black suspect shooting event, this time in Cincinnati.

This comes after Ferguson, Baltimore and New York, so four altogether where cops are in the crosshairs of a frenzied media. Four.

Never mentioned are the million cops who make their daily stops heroically and honorably and without fanfare.

Quite a media frenzy it’s been about Cincinnati, people saying here’s more proof of police brutality against blacks.

No! This proves the opposite. We are shocked by alleged police misbehavior in America not because it is so frequent, but because it is so rare.

If it were frequent it would be as boring and as unreported and last night’s 38 black-on-black shootings in Chicago.

We are shocked by criminal acts committed by Israelis because it is so out of character.

From Israelis we demand perfection. Likewise cops. One false move and it’s Gotcha.
